Muziek en animatie: al jaren zorgt deze combinatie voor vuurwerk. Of het nu gaat om de klassieke Disney songs of de nieuwe animatieclip van Moby, de rijke geschiedenis van liedjes in animatievorm blijft het bekijken waard. Met de reeks Zing mee op Zondag, zal ik vanaf nu wekelijks één liedje onder de loep nemen. Deze week: Under The Sea uit The Little Mermaid.
Alan Menken schreef dit speelse lied in 1989 voor de Disney klassieker The Little Mermaid. Howard Ashman was verantwoordelijk voor de tekst. Het lied weerspiegelt de smeekbede van de krab Sebastiaan (Samuel E. Wright). Hij wil Ariël doen inzien dat het leven onder de zee zorgenvrij is in tegenstelling tot de wrede mensenwereld daarboven.
Under The Sea ontving een Oscar voor beste lied en troefde daarmee onder andere Kiss The Girls af, dat andere lied uit The Little Mermaid.
Het stond eerst in de planning dat Sebastiaan een Engels accent zou krijgen. Tekstschrijver Ashman suggereerde echter een Jamaicaans accent, wat automatisch voor een meer swingend effect zorgde. Het meest kenmerkend geluid voor Under The Sea is dat van de Caribische steeldrum, dat zijn populariteit danig zag stijgen.
Ook Homer Simpson heeft ooit een leven onder de zee geambieerd, Marge was echter minder enthousiast:
